Read all about it! Sharon Tyler Herbst, author of the invaluable reference book, The New Food Lover’s Companion, has joined forces with Ron Herbst, and rewritten and updated The Wine Lover’s Companion, making it a most complete and down-to-earth reference for wine servers, drinkers, and collectors. It’s an A-Z collection of details on grape varieties, wine-growing regions, wine label terms, wine styles, winemaking techniques, how to buy, store, and serve wine, how to plan a wine tasting party, ordering wine in a restaurant, temperatures for serving wine, and much more. . Food of the godsMay we suggest a New Year’s resolution? Resolve to join the Blue Heron group at the Food of the Gods Festival in Oaxaca, Mexico, October 2-9, 2004! Oaxaca (pronounced Wah-HAH-kah) is a city 300 miles southeast of Mexico City. The community is renowned for its cuisines, high-quality folk art and crafts, galleries, museums and its lively zocalo (town square). The archaeological ruins of Monte Alban are just outside the city. You’ll have the opportunity to take cooking classes with local chefs, dine in Oaxaca’s best restaurants, shop the markets and discover the authentic foods of the region. It’s an enchanting city, offering a fascinating blend of vibrant indigenous culture and Spanish colonial heritage. Microplane This handy tool was once a woodworker’s rasp. Now it does triple duty as a zester, a grater for hard cheeses and garlic, and, of course, as a handy tool in the basement wood shop. Hundreds of tiny razor-like holes finely slice and shave rather than ripping and shredding. Just slide the Microplane Grater/Zester over a lemon like a bow over a fiddle and watch as it easily creates fine dry zest. The Microplane also shaves Parmesan and other hard cheeses into piles of baby-fine shreds.Belle of the butter Love your butter soft, but worry about it staying fresh? It’s a practical and decorative solution for serving and storing butter. Make your own crisp, brown pizza crusts with our baking stones, designed to replicate the baking conditions produced by the brick floors of commercial bread and pizza ovens. And, if you’re a bread baker, you’ll love the way the stone evenly distributes heat and absorbs moisture, helping you create crusty artisan loaves of fresh baked bread.Inspired by the past Yellowware pottery came into existence in 16th century England, and began its American manufacturing in the 1800’s. Distinguished by its deep rich colors and beautiful glazes, it was the household standard for all baking, mixing, and kitchen storage prior to the invention of glass bakeware and plastic storage containers. We recently discovered a manufacturer who makes faithful reproductions of this handsome pottery. Available in bright green, brown, mustard, or light green, we have mixing bowls, pitchers, custard cups, gravy pourers, ramekins, pie plates, covered casseroles, bean pots, handled French onion soup bakers, mugs, and parfait glasses. A reminder of kitchens past, and timeless building blocks for kitchens present and future. From the big island Travel to Hawaii vicariously with our new selection of Hawaiian hot sauces. They have shown that same commitment in the design of their cookware, which features an exclusive therm-alloy construction. The first layer is an 18/10 stainless steel cooking surface. Layers 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are a specially designed combination of aluminum alloys for quick, optimum heat distribution and ’magnetic’ stainless steel for induction cooking. rick allen art When we asked illustrator Rick Allen to come up with a new design for Blue Heron shirts and aprons, he went into a designing frenzy! He arrived with a handful of papers with a dozen or more sketches, and then began producing more on the spot. After we all calmed down, we finally chose one design (although we wanted all 25 of them); a quirky, irresistible heron in a chef coat who is now making an appearance on tote bags, long-sleeved tees, and aprons. Deck your halls Unbelievable as it may seem, we usually order our Christmas ornaments and holiday trimmings in March for delivery in the fall. That means that when we unpack them and put them out, they’re often a surprise to us as well as to our customers. It’s usually a pleasant surprise to see and remember what we have ordered (although our fellow Blue Herons always strive to award an ‘ugliest ornament’ title to one lonely item). We hope you’ll be pleasantly surprised by this year’s selection. And we wish you the merriest of times decking your halls.

Family traditions Blue Heron Sam McCormick tells us that as she was growing up, one of her favorite holiday treats was her mother’s Mint Fudge Bars, which have a top layer of fudge that “peels off”. Her parents report that the top layer would mysteriously disappear off a section of the pan of bars. Sam swears her brother did it, and he protests it was really her. Try her recipe and see who snitches the fudge off of yours:Sam’s Mom’s Mint Fudge Bars |
